Back in 1986 Massey Ferguson made tractor history when it launched the first ever machines to feature a host of electronically controlled features and previously unheard of automation. The new 3000 Series tractors not only looked new they also changed farming forever!
In the first part of a four part series, we take a close look at how these machines came to be using much previously unseen footag from the Massey Ferguson archives, now owned by parent company AGCO. In these films the story of how these tractors were designed, from early mock-ups to working prototypes, is explained. Plus of course we see how MF pioneered the use of electronics for three-point linkage control on early models such as the 4000, 2005 and 3500 Series. Part One finishes with the UK launch of the 3000 Series range along with the more basic 300 Series, and the demonstration team certainly prove what these tractors were capable of compared to the competition of the day.
Part Two takes over with a detailed look at the 3000 Series features before moving on to the brand new 3600 range launched in 1987. These new tractors took the principles established in the 3000 Series machines and took them to new heights of power. In this programme the original MF films are joined by a unique look at a working 3070 tractor during the 1990s from our own archives providing the first of our fascinating model case studies.
Part Three continues the story of the first ever modern tractors as we chart the history of the groundbreaking Massey Ferguosn 3000, 3100 and 3600 Series machines. The family expands with the launch of the new 3100 Series tractors as well as new models in the 3600 Series and the introduction of the Memotronic system that enables infromation from the Datatronic terminal to be collected and then removed to the office computer back at the farm - the very first example of precisioin farming!
Part Four looks in detail at the very clever Dynashift four stage powershift system first introduced on the 3600 Series tractors as well as the very last 3000 Series tractors to be introduced - the 3120 and 3075. The story is brought to a close by the introduction of the replacement 6100 and 8100 tractors.
The legacy of the first thinking tractors is clear to see because farming would never be the same again!
