Tractor Of The Month

AUGUST

INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER 956XL

The International Harvester 956XL is a real tractor icon! Originally launched as the 955 - part of the 55 Series - in 1977 it was a 90hp six cylinder tractor back then before becoming the 95hp 956XL in the 1980s. Complete with the excellent XL cab the 956 was built in Germany as apposed to the smaller 885 and other tractors that were built in Yorkshire, but this did not stop the 956 becoming a very popular tractor here in the UK. With nearly a hundred horses under the bonnet and a very smooth running six cylinder motor under the long hood the 956 soon found itself to be a well thought of machine from both farmers and operators alike and the gearbox was simply a joy to use with its long control levers mounted to the right hand side of the driver. In fact all the main driving controls were positioned to the right in direct contrast to the firms smaller models which had a much more cluttered layout.

The XL cabin itself was a very pleasant place in which to spend a long working day with a large glass area, comfortable seat, wide opening doors and it was quiet too, although most drivers would prefer to have the door side windows open just to hear the purr of that beautiful six pot engine!

As part of the red International Harvester range the 956XL continued in production after the merger of International Harvester with J. I. Case in 1985 and emerged afterwards in the darker red Case IH livery. It would continue to be offered throughout the 1980s and it continued to be a very popular machine both in the UK and mainland Europe.

With many original examples still to be found at work today the 956 certainly deserves the title of tractor of the month simply because it is such a popular machine with drivers and farmers alike. It is extremely reliable in the mechanical department and a pleasure to drive in respect to both the cab environment and how it responds while driving - but above all else the 956's most enduring feature has to be that simply fantastic six cylinder IH diesel engine!
